Maroon movements
a little more about freedom yard
maroon communities and movements exist throughout the african diaspora. originally established by enslaved african and indigenous peoples that self-liberated to organise free communities away from colonial structures. Maroon communities reclaimed and leveraged resources like ancestral wisdom, knowledge of nature, healing folk practices, craft technologies and collective economic systems. these communities continue to inspire and influence black liberation movements, spiritual communities and counter culture.
the freedom yard centers African diaspora and global majority communities. we welcome all people that are curious to lean into a maroon way of being, in service of subverting systems of oppression, to re:member our indigeneity as a generative, creative, resourcing, self-sustaining movement towards collective liberation and empowerment. to claim a world where everyone is whole, with, well and wealthy.
we are guided by decolonial pan-african principles and practices of Tallawah: we are more than can be seen, creative, resourceful and whole, ubuntu: we exist as an expression of an intraconnected web of life, sankofa: we reach back to the past, to understand the present, to shape our future, ma’at: we nurture life sustaining balance and purpose.
